ReDoS is the documentary network of Siena's province gathering Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres of the municipalities of Siena's Province.
Its main duty is to emphasize the characteristics and particularities of each Libraries harmonizing their organisation in the name of cooperation.

Browser Requirements

For a correct navigation and consultation you need a Web browser (Internet Explorer 5.x or superior; Netscape 6.2 or superior) which is set up to support Unicode (UTF-8 character set), used for the bibliographic records encoding. Unicode allows for the display of a large range of alfabethics, diacritics (also known as accent marks) and special characters.

To set the browser character encoding:

  • Internet Explorer:

    From the View menu , select Encoding, then click on Auto-select.

  • Netscape:

    From the View menu, select Character coding, then Auto-detect, then All [for Netscape 6.x] or Universal [per Netscape 7.x].
Screen display

The upper part of the screen, next to the logo, shows the search menu:
Basic search, Multi-field search, Advanced search and CCL
and the session management's function:
Sign-in, My library card, Preferences, My e-Shelf , Help and End session.
The central part of the screen is the working area of the user.

Sign-in Torna all´inizio


Sign-in verifies the Patron information and allows to see the personal library information (loan, cash, late return) and display options. There is no need to sign in to use the Catalogue.

  • Students or employees of the University of Siena have to digit, in the first field, the user's name of the e-mail address, given by the University of Siena and in the second field, the connected password.
  • Other users, for any other reason of the Siena's Librarian Service (REDOS users), digit in the first field, the first twelve digits of the FISCAL CODE and in the second field the complete fiscal code. Attention! If the identification fails, please digit the fiscal code without the last digit.
  • ERASMUS students have to digit the codes given by the Student Secretary of the University of Siena.

The Sign-in function allows to:
  • save in the history folder the search strategies done and re-use them in the next session;

  • save the bibliographic records of previous searches in My e-shelf folder in order to display them again the future session;

  • renew on line loans Renew
    (only for libaries which have activated the service);

  • check the actual loans and the historical loans;

  • request on line an item Hold request
    (only for libaries which have activated the service);

  • access to the personalized service of alerting SDI (Selective Dissemination of information);

  • set up the personalized display options.

Session End Torna all´inizio

This option brings back to the main screen of OPAC and allows to start a new work session.
The use of this function is raccomended at the end of a work session where the user has identyfied in the system.
In this way the personal information associated with the open session, will be deleted, preventing that other people will continued the OPAC search using the same identity;

User's Profile Torna all´inizio

Gives access to the user's current and past activities in the Library. After the identyfication, accessing to the menu User Profile is possible to see the Loans History (up to 200 loans), the current Loan, the Cash transactions, the Holdings for documents which are already on loan.

Preferences Torna all´inizio

Through the menu Preferences the user can choose either the language of the interface and the display of the retrived information, such as, for instance:
- the number of records in each page in the short format;
- the maximum number of records in the full view format display;
- the format in which records are displayed (if only author, title and items, if in the short format, if in columnar format).
Search Torna all´inizio

The Search function enables you to find records, their location and availability by entering keywords, phrases or scan list.
To perform any search, select it from the menu bar.
There are four different Search types available in the OPAC web:
Basic search; Multi-field search; Advanced search; Common Command Language.
Leave out the initial article in any language you are searching a document. For instance, if you search the book The Desert of the Tartars you have to type Desert of the tartars, The history of Albania type history of Albania;

Boolean Operators and truncation masks Torna all´inizio

ALEPH supports and , or, e not Boolean operators. And is assumed if no operator is present.
Operator AND: two terms given, retrieves only records that contain both the first and the second term;
Operator OR: two terms given, retrieves records that contain or teh first term or the second ro both;
Operator NOT: two terms given, retrieves records that contain the first BUT not the second term.

The multi-field , advanced and CCL searches can be limited by language, format, year or yearly range and location.
These limits are defined in the low part of each search screen.

In addition to the suggestions for searching, at the bottom of each screen, there are other general rules which apply to every kind of search;

The character ? or * (asterisk) can be at the beginning, at the end or in the middle of a word, but no more than one can be used in a text string.

The sign # can be used to find different spelling when for the same word orthographic variations exsist. For example colo#:r will retrive either color and colour; arch#eology will find either archaeology and archeology.

The sing ! can be used to retrieve orthographic variations when a single caracther can change. For example wom!n will retrieve either woman and women.

Basic Search Torna all´inizio

The basic search interface presents a single menu to search for keywords and scan list, selecting the correct field.

For example, selecting the menu All fields is possible to type author, title, pubblication year, publisher just in one string;
Words from title starts searching the key words only in the titles present in the catalogue;
Words from indexes of volumes and journals search the digitalized indexes of journals and anthologies;
If in the menu Title starting with, the initial part of the searchable string has typed, the result will be an alphabethical/numeral list where all the terms answered or are closed to the search done.
In the browse search, when the searched string doesn't exist, in the headings list the position where it has to be, is marked with elocution "[xyz] should be here".

Multi-field Search Torna all´inizio

The multi-field search allows to search record using defined indexes.
If more than a field is compiled, the boolean operator AND is automatically insert.
The more fields you can fill in, the narrower the search.

Advanced Search Torna all´inizio

The Advanced search allows you to search records in the catalogue using key words . It is possible to use the drop down menu to specify fields and define the searching methods.
The OPAC Web offers different field as Author, Subject, Title, Publisher. The relation between these three fields is done by the logical operator AND.
To display the list of records, click on the link available in the column that gives the record number. The Results List can display and sort up to (7000) records.

Common Command Language Torna all´inizio

The Common Command Language (CCL) searches for words and headings in several different indexes at once. You must specify the code of the word and the heading indexes to be searched.
The abbreviations used in CCL can be found in the following section CCL Codes.

Here is an example:

((wau=carlyle or ruskin or hegel) and (wti=cultur?)) not (wsu=art?)

This search will find anything written by individuals named Carlyle or Ruskin or Hegel with a title containing the word cultur, for example, culture, cultures, cultural and so on, but the subject will not contain the word art, for example, art, arts, artist, artistic, and so on.

Search Results Torna all´inizio

The search result can be a single record or a list of record displayed in the short format.
It is alway possible to go back to the list of the retrieved record in a specific search, selecting the menu Previous search.
In a list is possible to display the full format record by clicking on the sequence number of the listed records, or selecting with a tick the record and clicking on the menu See selected in Selected Records .

Records are sorted by the publication year of the retrieved records. It is possible to re-arrange the list by clicking on the strings inOptions of sorting, or if the list is in a tabellar format, by clicking on the other column's headings (author, title).

From a List of Record many actions are possible:

  • selection;
  • creating a subset allows you to work with a group of records selected from a result set for other refinements or matchings;
  • moving records in the basket for later saving or e-mail delivery;
  • change research by the definition of other parameters;
  • refining the search options by filters.


    Full View of Record Torna all´inizio

    From the display of the full record is possible to see different formats, such as Standard format, catalographic card, citation and two format that represent UNIMARC format (textual and numeric Unimarc card).
    The full format also offers links (for the strings that appear in bold) that activate Aleph's services for searching other documents in catalogue, similar to the one displayed, to scroll through a list of headings starting from the retrived one, or find information through a web browser as Google.
    From the full record is also possible to retrieve information about the libraries that own the item, on its circulation policy.
    If a record describes an electronic journal or has an external link, this will be displayed with a link to the web resource

    From the full display of a record it is also possible to use other options, available from the menĂ¹ bar over the record that enable to:

    • save the selected records in the e-shelf, by clicking on Add to My e-shelf;
    • search similar records in other catalogue, by clicking on Locate;
    • save the record on the PC or send it by e-mail from the button Save/Send;
    • activate the available services (full text, abstract, interlibrary loan, and so on), by the button .

    Previous Searches Torna all´inizio

    From the menu Previous searches is possible to display the result's list of previous searches, incorporate them into new searches, or combine them into one result set.

  • To see a previous search, select it and click View.
  • To erase a search, select it and click Delete.
  • To activate an alerting service click on SDI Request (available service for the authenticated user).

  • To match together two or more searches, select them and click Cross.

    The Cross button works in different ways with results' set through the logical operators:
    and, or, First set not the second, Second set not the first.
    To cross sets with the operators First set not the second and Second set not the first, only two sets must be selected.

    My e-shelf Torna all´inizio

    "My e-shelf" is a temporary storage area for retrieved records from the Web OPAC for guest users (as it empties automatically at the end of the session), permanent and retrieved in each next search session, for the identified patrons.

    It is possible to add records to the e-shelf, either from the full display of each record, and from the brief view list after selecting records that have to be saved, clicking on Add to My e-shelf.
    In both cases the system asks to put a note for records saved in the e-shelf.

    From My e-shelf is possible to:

    • save records on the local PC;
    • send records by e-mail to a specified address;
    • manage records and create specific folders to save records distinguished by search's subject.
    To view the contents of My e-Shelf, from the menu bar click My e-shelf.

    History Torna all´inizio

    The History function is available only for the identified user and it displays the previous searches done in other session.
    Searches are saved in a permanente buffer and can be used as bookmarks for other uses.
    This function is accessible from the Previous searches screen.

    To view the saved searches, click History from the menu bar.

    From the search queries in the History screen, you can rerun your search queries by clicking Find, or delete them from the permanent buffer. Note that the value displayed in the No. of Records column refers to the number of records retrieved at the time that the search query was first run.

    Holdings Torna all´inizio

    To view Holdings information for a given library, in the screen list of results, click on the underlined library's name. If you are and identified user, you can use the link Request, to send a loan request for the item.a richiesta di prestito per il documento.

    • Click on the underlined label Item from the full view of a record. The items list of a library will be displayed.
    From the list is possible to:
    • Click on Request (if available) to place a request for the item.

    • Click on Expand to view all available details about the item record:
    If the Holdings List contains a Due Date hyperlink, this indicates that the item is currently on loan.

    Item Booking Torna all´inizio


    After identification is possible to book an item if:


    • your library has activated the service;

    • the book is on loan;

    • the library doesn't have any like item available on shelf;

    • you don't have any past due loan or current exclusion from loan.


    Renewals Torna all´inizio

    After identification is possible to renew on line a loan if:


    • your library has activated the service;

    • the item's status allows that;

    • the item hasn't been booked by another user;

    • you don't have any past due loan.




    SDI Torna all´inizio

    SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) is designed to alert patrons to recently added or updated records in their specified area of interest. The SDI mechanism enables to send notification about new publications on a specific field that have arrived at the library.

    To use the service, a Feed Reeder has to be downloaded on the user's pc. A feed reader can be free downloaded for this address http://www.feedreader.com/

    To make an SDI request, click on the link SDI Request available for the Previous searches screen. If you are not logged in, the system will ask you to log-in. The SDI Record (new/update) window appears. This is the window in which you can create a new SDI profile or update an existing one and it contains the following fields:

    • SDI name: enter the name that you want to save your request under.

    • Print Format: choose the print format that you want to receive your records in.

    • Interval Count: define the intervals between runs of your SDI query, for example, seven days, four weeks, and so on.

    • SDI Message: type text for a message to be included into the SDI notification's body.

    • SDI Request: displays the original search term (for example, words= Buddhism).

    • SDI Sublibrary: you can set your SDI query to run for a specific location or regardless of location.

    • SDI Base List: select the base that you want your SDI request to run on.

    • E-mail Address: if the e-mail is in the patron library card, this field is automatically compiled.

    • Alternative Email: pyou can define an alternative e-mail address for your SDI results lists to be sent to.

    • Email subject: define a subject for your SDI results lists.

    • Expiry Date: define the expiry date for your SDI profile. The SDI results lists will not be sent to you after this date.

    • Suspend SDI from/to: you can suspend your SDI searches for a certain period (for example, vacations). You will not get SDI notifications till the end of the suspension period.

    • Encoding:: select the character set in which you want to receive your SDI results list.

    • Delivery Methods: select the delivery method with which you want to receive the results list: e-mail, RSS or both.

    • No Results Message: define whether or not you want to receive reports of SDI searches that retrieve no results.
    To view all your SDI profiles, after the log-in, go to My Library Card and click the SDI profiles link from the options bar. The opening page allows you to view all your SDI profiles, modify, duplicate and delete them. From this screen, you can also refine your SDI profiles. Clicking Online Search from this window executes the selected SDI request in real time. You will not receive SDI notification regarding items found in the online search.
